Abstract

The threat of climate change held a predominant position in geopolitical debates and news headlines for the past decade. Many countries – either due to the lack of resources or due to mismanagement rooted in denialist narratives – have not been able to tackle this problem, and, thus, meet the projected goals set during landmark international forums. In contrast, China and Brazil, both emerging economies facing similar climate-related challenges, have found a common interest in combating environmental degradation. Defined by Chinese investments in Brazil’s renewable energy sector and initiatives fostering sustainable development, the giant dragon has played a crucial role in ecological project developments within Brazilian soil. Nonetheless, Brazil’s volatile environmental policies have created uncertainty. Even so, this robust trade and development partnership has provided a solid foundation for a green transition. This paper examines the nuances of this relationship by investigating whether economic cooperation between these two major emerging nations can contribute to the global green transition, considering their respective economic and environmental prospects.
