POM: The Countering Foreign Interference Act: Canada’s domestic protection dilemma

The previous decade has seen increased awareness in Western democracies of the need to protect
national sovereignty from foreign interference and transnational repression. A 2025 Freedom House
Report shows there have been 1,219 incidents of transnational repression, carried out by 48 governments
across 103 countries, over the past ten years. Canada is an appealing target for such foreign interference, prompting calls for the government to introduce legislation to address these risks.
